- start in a position of minimal pain and discomfort
- build awareness of posture and move toward the neutral spine
- strengthen targeted muscles and move toward gentle extension
- engage core stabilization, particularly using exhalation
- initially avoid flexion, especially flexion and rotation movements
- attention always on strengthening and stabilization first
